In many cases, these maps are a series of PDF files, with one PDF file acting as the index showing the different detailed maps that are available.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/edbilodeau\/files\/2013\/06\/Clipboard01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-301\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/edbilodeau\/files\/2013\/06\/Clipboard01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/edbilodeau\/files\/2013\/06\/Clipboard01.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/edbilodeau\/files\/2013\/06\/Clipboard01-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/edbilodeau\/files\/2013\/06\/Clipboard01-388x300.jpg 388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each of these regions is actually a link that opens a separate PDF file with a more detailed representation of the area and other information.<\/p>\n<p>We recently discovered that these links in the PDF files were not working for some users. After a bit of investigation, it appears that the culprit are browsers that are using a built in PDF reader instead of Acrobat Reader. In other words, <strong>the problem occurs with Firefox and Chrome.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The only workarounds we have at the moment are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download the PDF file to your desktop and then double-click to open it in Acrobat Reader.<\/li>\n<li>Switch to Internet Explorer or Safari when working with the Maps and geospatial section of our web site.<\/li>\n<li>Disable the built-in browsers in Firefox [<a href=\"https:\/\/support.mozilla.org\/en-US\/kb\/disable-built-pdf-viewer-and-use-another-viewer\">instructions<\/a>] or Chrome [<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chrome\/answer\/1060734?hl=en\">instructions<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Not ideal, but at the moment it is what works.<\/p>\n<p>We are looking into how we could fix the content so that it works with built in browsers. This <a href=\"https:\/\/support.mozilla.org\/en-US\/questions\/934641#answer-360388\">Q &amp; A thread<\/a> suggests that when you create the link the PDF file you need to use the absolute URL (from http:\/\/\/&#8230;) and not the relative URL. It wouldn&#8217;t surprise me if that was what is happening here.
