{"id":520,"date":"2014-02-02T17:03:36","date_gmt":"2014-02-02T22:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/edbilodeau\/?p=520"},"modified":"2016-01-28T13:59:02","modified_gmt":"2016-01-28T18:59:02","slug":"update-on-running-ios-7-on-my-iphone-4-a4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/edbilodeau\/update-on-running-ios-7-on-my-iphone-4-a4\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on running iOS 7 on my iPhone 4 (A4)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPhone_4\">first-generation iPhone 4<\/a> (i.e. running the A4 processor) and are considering upgrading to iOS 7 my recommendation would be to hold off until you have a new phone with the processing power to handle it.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/edbilodeau\/2014\/01\/20\/running-ios-7-on-an-old-iphone-4\/\">upgrading to iOS 7 after a few weeks ago<\/a>, I can safely say that while the phone remains usable, it is a lot more sluggish even for basic operations. Sometimes the lag is barely noticeable, sometimes maddenly so.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t too hard to get used to the changes in the interface, but I while the UI for iOS 7 is different, I&#8217;m not sure it is any better. Learning the new way of doing things felt like climbing a hill to get back to where I was. Except that everything is a bit slower.<\/p>\n<p>So aside from getting to play with the new UI, in my opinion there is no upside to upgrading a first-gen iPhone 4 to iOS 7.<\/p>\n<p><em>Update (Mar 10): This Ars Technica article takes <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/apple\/2013\/09\/new-lease-on-life-or-death-sentence-ios-7-on-the-iphone-4\/\">a more detailed look at running iOS7 on an iPhone 4<\/a> and more or less jives with what I&#8217;ve experienced myself.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have a first-generation iPhone 4 (i.e. running the A4 processor) and are considering upgrading to iOS 7 my recommendation would be to hold off until you have a new phone with the processing power to handle it.
