Propaganda, Scammers, and Malarkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fake news was named the word of the year by the Collins English Dictionary in 2017. Collins\u2019 lexicographers said use of the term<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2017\/nov\/02\/fake-news-is-very-real-word-of-the-year-for-2017\"> increased by 365% since 2016<\/a>. In light of this, and in celebration of April Fools\u2019 Day, McGill Library presents a collection of books that delve into the history of wartime propaganda, the psychology of lying, and the stories of fraudsters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1897.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1141\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1897-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1897-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1897-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1897.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The term fake news is now synonymous with Donald Trump. To that end, we have included several recent publications about the current United States President. <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/993774487\">Donald Trump: The Making of a World View<\/a>\u00a0reveals how Trump\u2019s worldview was formed and how it affects policy. <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/1045645973\">Communication in the Age of Trump<\/a> is a collection of essays that examine how Trump uses Twitter to speak directly to the public. <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/1059520766\">Quand la clique nous manipule: Du Printemps \u00e9rable \u00e0 Donald Trump<\/a> hits a little closer to home by examining the marketing behind the 2012 Qu\u00e9bec student protests and how polarizing social movements that have come afterwards, such as the Make America Great Again rallies, have drawn on similar communications strategies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1896.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1138 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1896-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1896-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1896-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1896.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The book display also highlights biographies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/956553206\">Stalin\u2019s Englishman: The Lives of Guy Burgess<\/a>, about a British diplomat and Soviet agent, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/70398230\">A Life in Secrets: The Story of Vera Atkins<\/a> and the Lost Agents of SOE, a British intelligence officer who worked in France during the Second World War. <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/85692773\">Women Swindlers in America, 1860-1920<\/a> delves into the lives of women who were scam artists in the field of spiritualism, who told sob stories to get money, who ran matrimonial cons to increase their bank balances, and who swindled financial institutions by passing bad cheques.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1898.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1143\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1898-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1898-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1898-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2019\/03\/IMG_1898.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Cinema and photography were heavily relied upon during the Second World War as forms of propaganda. <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/1001967976\">Marketing the Third Reich: Persuasion, packaging and propaganda<\/a> re-conceptualizes Third Reich propaganda through the lens of consumer marketing. <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/268783735\">Memoria e immaginario : la Seconda Guerra mondiale nel cinema italiano<\/a> examines thematic traditions in Italian resistance cinema. <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/317922548\">Grand illusion: the Third Reich, the Paris exposition, and the cultural seduction of France<\/a>\u00a0touches on French reactions to Nazi culture in the 1930s and the Nazi party\u2019s construction of German identity in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in the mood for a good novel set in a dystopian future that heavily features state propaganda, then rest assured that the display features some classics, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/70130759\">The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/847522046\">Fahrenheit 451<\/a>. We also have contemporary graphic novels that address fake news, such as the recently published and highly acclaimed <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/1004939322\">Sabrina<\/a>.
