A common thread throughout this year&#8217;s themes is exploring the past in order to understand the present and build a better future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1348\" style=\"width: 204px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2020\/02\/rooted.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1348\" class=\"wp-image-1348 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2020\/02\/rooted-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2020\/02\/rooted-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/files\/2020\/02\/rooted.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Black History Month aims to celebrate and centre Blackness throughout the history, the present, and the future of McGill and beyond.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>McGill\u2019s theme for this year is Rooted, an exploration of the rooted past, present and future of Black history and communities. The 2020 theme for Black History Month is: &#8220;Canadians of African Descent: Going forward, guided by the past.&#8221; This was inspired by the theme of the United Nations\u2019 International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This year\u2019s programming will also honour Toni Morrison in light of her passing on August 5<sup>th<\/sup>, 2019. Toni Morrison was an American novelist, essayist, book editor, and college professor. Her first novel,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bluest_Eye\"><em>The Bluest Eye<\/em><\/a>, was published in 1970. The critically acclaimed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Song_of_Solomon_(novel)\"><em>Song of Solomon<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1977) brought her national attention and won the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Book_Critics_Circle_Award\">National Book Critics Circle Award<\/a>. In 1988, Morrison won the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pulitzer_Prize_for_Fiction\">Pulitzer Prize<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beloved_(novel)\"><em>Beloved<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1987); she gained worldwide recognition when she was awarded the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nobel_Prize_in_Literature\">Nobel Prize in Literature<\/a>\u00a0in 1993.
