This year, the McGill Library had the opportunity to welcome Oph\u00e9lie Wang for part of the winter semester. Oph\u00e9lie is a student at the \u00c9cole nationale sup\u00e9rieure des sciences de l\u2019information et des biblioth\u00e8ques (ENSSIB), a French grande \u00e9cole that trains librarians. As part of her training, she is at McGill to complete a six-week internship which began at the end of January. We had the opportunity to interview Oph\u00e9lie to learn more about her and her experiences at the Library thus far<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Cette ann\u00e9e, la Biblioth\u00e8que de l’Universit\u00e9 McGill a eu l\u2019occasion d\u2019accueillir Oph\u00e9lie Wang pour une partie de la session d’hiver. Oph\u00e9lie est une \u00e9l\u00e8ve biblioth\u00e9caire \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole nationale sup\u00e9rieure des sciences de l\u2019information et des biblioth\u00e8ques (ENSSIB), une grande \u00e9cole en France qui forme les biblioth\u00e9caires et les conservateur\u00b7rices de biblioth\u00e8ques. Dans le cadre de sa formation, elle est \u00e0 McGill pour effectuer un stage de six semaines qui a d\u00e9but\u00e9 fin janvier. Nous avons eu l\u2019occasion de passer Oph\u00e9lie en entrevue afin de conna\u00eetre plus \u00e0 son sujet et ses exp\u00e9riences \u00e0 la biblioth\u00e8que jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Q : Qu\u2019est-ce qui vous a incit\u00e9 \u00e0 vouloir travailler dans ce domaine?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oph\u00e9lie Wang (OW) :<\/strong> Alors en fait, moi je viens du Droit, en particulier du droit d\u2019auteur. Je pense que c\u2019est \u00e0 travers le droit d\u2019auteur que j\u2019ai d\u2019abord compris qu\u2019il avait beaucoup de questions de libre acc\u00e8s notamment et qu\u2019il avait des gens qui dans les universit\u00e9s travaillaient vraiment sur \u00e7a et que c\u2019\u00e9tait un m\u00e9tier. Je pense que c\u2019est comme \u00e7a que j\u2019ai d\u00e9couvert la profession de biblioth\u00e9caire et ensuite je me suis renseign\u00e9 davantage sur ce que \u00e7a pourrait \u00eatre et \u00e7a m\u2019a vraiment attir\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q : Why did you choose to come to McGill?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

OW :<\/strong> I asked for this internship specifically. I wanted to find out about another system because I\u2019ve already worked in France and the French libraries so I wanted to see how it was done elsewhere. I was also interested by the specific status of librarians here, as they are sorted by faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q : What do you do here at the Library?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

OW :<\/strong> I work with both the Humanites and Social Sciences Library with Michael David Miller in French Language Literature, and with the Law Library. I have two projects specifically; In French Language Literature I\u2019m working on how to communicate about accessing books while they are not accessible and in Law I\u2019m working on the benchmark on the Law Library\u2019s workshops, so what kind of workshops are offered throughout Canada and what could inspire the Law Library here. The idea is that I\u2019m also really integrated into the team, so I also attend meetings which is very useful for me to see how the team really works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q : Quel est votre partie pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e de cette exp\u00e9rience?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

OW : <\/strong>Je pense que ma partie pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e c\u2019est vraiment travailler avec l\u2019\u00e9quipe ici, donc apprendre \u00e0 connaitre les diff\u00e9rentes biblioth\u00e9caires et puis aussi vraiment me sentir int\u00e9gr\u00e9e dans et faire partie de de l\u2019\u00e9quipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q :<\/strong> What have you learned here so far? Have you learned anything new?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

OW:<\/strong> Oh yes, a lot. I think one thing that\u2019s very useful for me is the role of Liaison Librarians. That doesn\u2019t exist as such in France, but the way Liaison Librarians really cultivate their relationship with their faculty and their students \u2013 they often say like \u201cmy\u201d students, \u201cmy\u201d faculty \u2013 and the way they really build bridges with research and with teaching is really inspiring to me and I want to bring that back with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q : Avez-vous une histoire int\u00e9ressante de votre temps ici?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

OW : <\/strong>Je ne sais pas si c\u2019est une histoire, mais une autre chose qui m\u2019a marqu\u00e9 ici c\u2019est l\u2019ouverture des biblioth\u00e8ques universitaires sur la communaut\u00e9 et vraiment le d\u00e9sir des biblioth\u00e9caires de servir non seulement les \u00e9tudiant\u00b7es et les professeur\u00b7es, mais aussi la communaut\u00e9 en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Je trouve \u00e7a assez inspirant que je veuille essayer, pas de reproduire puisque les circonstances ne sont pas les m\u00eames, mais de m\u2019inspirer dans mon futur poste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
