{"id":3510,"date":"2025-04-30T13:26:58","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T17:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/?p=3510"},"modified":"2025-05-14T10:40:45","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T14:40:45","slug":"discovering-local-gems-in-asian-heritage-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/hsslibrary\/discovering-local-gems-in-asian-heritage-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovering Local Gems in Asian Heritage Month!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-text-align-center\">We offer our deepest condolences to the Filipino Community of Vancouver and all other communities affected by the Lapu Lapu Festival tragedy!<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The McGill Libraries is celebrating this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/asian-heritage-month.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/asian-heritage-month.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asian Heritage Month<\/a> with books and films by Quebecers of Asian heritage and those about them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out these two Redpath Book Displays:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/libraryguides.mcgill.ca\/redpathbookdisplay\/asian-quebecers\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/libraryguides.mcgill.ca\/redpathbookdisplay\/asian-quebecers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creative Asian Quebecers<\/a><\/strong> showcases fiction, nonfiction, and poetry by Quebec writers of Asian heritage, and also films by Quebec directors of Asian heritage. Many of these creative workers are globally known and have won multiple prizes. (Note: the president of the Foundation, Honourable Dr. Vivienne Poy, was instrumental in having May recognized as Asian Heritage Month across Canada.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Film director Karen Cho\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/1418965586\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mcgill.on.worldcat.org\/oclc\/1418965586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Fight in Little Chinatown<\/a><\/em> (2022) tells stories through the voices of members of Chinatowns in Canada and the United States (Montreal, Vancouver, and New York). While each story is unique, they share similar present challenges. How can they preserve their Chinatown amidst the intense urban development around it? How can they embrace their heritage and culture, while pursuing individual dreams?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">As you will learn from these documentary films, for the old-time Montrealers of Chinese heritage, Chinatown is more than a heritage site and tourist attraction. It is a source of personal memories, as well as a community gathering place.
