This is the collective effort of five people from different fi<a href=\"https:\/\/ajammc.com\/2019\/07\/10\/against-digital-colonialism-morehshin-allahyari\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4197 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/space-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/space-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/space-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/space-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/space.jpg 830w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>elds, ranging from academia to filmmaking, music and journalism. By employing diverse skills and knowledge, they provide greater access to the more complex and nuanced discussions and debates within in the academy in the region, which they refer to as Ajamistan. The underlining premise is that this region, while part of the Middle East, is under-represented in Western and online media.<\/p>\n<p>Ajam in Arabic means \u2018otherness\u2019 and for this reason the term \u2018Ajamistan\u2019 was coined to refer to a geographical area from Turkey in the West and to Iran, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Afghanistan and South Asia in th<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4196 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/2-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/2-500x282.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/2.jpg 827w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>e East. A common thread among these countries is the influence of Persianate culture and heritage present during the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal eras until the 18<sup>th<\/sup> to 19<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. In addition, since Persian was the language of culture and literature, these countries were influenced and continue to reflect various elements of Persianate culture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;Ajam Media Collective is committed to uniting authors from various backgrounds and disciplines to promote diverse critical views on culture, politics, and society, emphasizing the region\u2019s importance as a thriving cultural center whose multiple realities are too often obscured by the popular Western and global media.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, this online platform focusses on <a href=\"https:\/\/ajammc.com\/2017\/05\/15\/seta-hagopian-fairuz-iraq\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4194 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/Ajam-records.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"853\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/Ajam-records.jpg 853w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/Ajam-records-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/Ajam-records-768x446.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2019\/10\/Ajam-records-500x290.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/a>covering cultural and society related matters in this region, as well as shedding light on contemporary and historical issues via informed analysis, by offering semi-scholarly resources from academics, activists and student input.
