{"id":4326,"date":"2020-01-06T12:39:54","date_gmt":"2020-01-06T17:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/?p=4326"},"modified":"2020-03-10T09:47:28","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T13:47:28","slug":"al-zahrawisurs-30th-manuscript-volume-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/al-zahrawisurs-30th-manuscript-volume-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"A manuscript from Morocco, Al-Zahra\u0304wi\u0304sur\u2019s 30th manuscript volume: \u2018Surgery\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Umayyad era, during the 11<sup>th<\/sup> century, Al-Zahra\u0304wi\u0304, H\u0331alaf ibn &#8216;Abba\u0304s Abu\u0304 al-Qa\u0304sim, known in the west as Abulcasis (936-1013?), was a distinguished Andalusian Arabic physician. One of his most well known contribution in the field of medicine is an encyclopaedia called <strong><em>\u201cAl-Ta\u1e63ri\u0304f liman \u2018a\u01e7iza \u2018an al-Ta&#8217;li\u0304f\u201d<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0This masterpiece comprises of thirty books covering various medical topics, starting with general medical information, continues with theories, pharmacology, diagnosis, therapeutics and ends with surgery and instruments.<\/p>\n<p>This manuscript is housed at the Biblioth\u00e8que Nationale du Royaume du Maroc (BNRM) (National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco).\u00a0 Volume 30th\u00a0 of this work, the manuscript about surgery, is the most important and the highlight of this document and the reason to its world significance.<\/p>\n<p>What is particularly interesting about this last part of\u00a0Al-Zahra\u0304wi\u0304sur\u2019s work is that, it is a unique heritage to humanity because of its script, antiquity, colored drawings, Andalusian calligraphy and its historical values \u201cas it is to the best of our knowledge, the oldest in the world: AH 610\/1213\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, what makes this manuscript so exceptional and irreplaceable, is because it is considered to be the first work in the history of surgery to provide surgical explanations and instruments all illustrated in colour. All these values made this document to be a good candidate to be listed as a World Documentary Heritage on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/communication-and-information\/memory-of-the-world\/register\/full-list-of-registered-heritage\/registered-heritage-page-5\/manuscript-of-al-zahrawisu\/\">UNESCO\u2019 Memory of the World Programme registry<\/a>, in 2016 it was nominated by Morocco and was inscribed in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/8f8bef69ba.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4332 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/8f8bef69ba.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/8f8bef69ba.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/8f8bef69ba-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/8f8bef69ba-768x535.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/8f8bef69ba-431x300.jpg 431w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The values of this manuscript:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8211; It is devoted entirely to the subject of surgery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It has influenced the work of surgeons in both the East and West for several centuries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It is an important reference to the surgical profession.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It is the first work in surgical history to provide illustrations and explanations of surgical instruments, many of which were invented by al-Zahra\u0304wi\u0304sur himself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It has been translated into several languages.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/48121b0ab1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4333 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/48121b0ab1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/48121b0ab1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/48121b0ab1-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/48121b0ab1-768x525.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/islamicstudieslibrary\/files\/2020\/01\/48121b0ab1-439x300.jpg 439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Due to its great importance, this book has, for five centuries, remained part of the surgery programmes at the Universities of Salerne and Montpellier.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moreover, besides its World Significance, some historical values add up to the importance of this manuscripts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The author of the manuscript is a perfect reflection of his time.
