Since the physical closure of McGill University and the Library in March, we have all been navigating new territory with regards to finding suitable and accessible resources for practice, performance, and research. One particular challenge that music students and faculty face is getting access to scores. However, there are several options available to the McGill community<\/span>\u00a0to locate online scores for perusal or even for printing. Here is a guide to\u00a0<\/span>some useful\u00a0<\/span>resources and websites<\/span>\u00a0beyond\u00a0<\/span>IMSLP<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Internet Archive<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Online Score Collections<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(McGill community only)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Classical Scores Library<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0<\/span>large\u00a0<\/span>collection of full, study, piano, and vocal scores and encompasses a wide range of classical music genres from the Medieval period to the 21<\/span>st<\/span>\u202fcentury. Scores can be viewed online, downloaded, and printed in full. You can access, for example, the study score of Mendelssohn\u2019s op. 64 Violin Concerto, the full score of Mozart\u2019s Don Giovanni, and a modern edition of Orlando di Lasso\u2019s motet\u00a0<\/span>Videntes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>stellam<\/span>\u00a0Magi. Some editions even include individual parts for chamber music.<\/span><\/p>\n

Browse by genre, time period, or composer, or use the Advanced Search function to search for specific works using keywords, opus number, instrumentation, or publisher.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BabelScores<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>is an excellent resource for exploring contemporary music. You can browse by instrument, genre, or composer, or use the Advanced Search function (under the Catalog tab), which\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span>filter results by difficulty or the use of extended techniques. Once you have\u00a0<\/span>made your selection<\/span>, you are provided\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>information about the work,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>instrumentation, the full score (with an excellent zoom function and the ability to download a PDF)<\/span>, and a recording. You can even contact the composer by email!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A number of music publishers offer access to online scores for perusal: click here<\/a> to watch our video tutorial. You can create a free account on the <\/span>Boosey & Hawkes<\/span><\/a>\u202f<\/span>website and log in to view their selection of online scores.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although there are fewer online scores available for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>historical\u00a0<\/span><\/span>composers such as Brahms, Mozart, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>J.S. Bach<\/span><\/span>, 20<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and 21<\/span><\/span>st<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>century composers are well represented in their online catalogue<\/span><\/span>, including\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Leonard Bernstein,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Elliott Carter,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Unsuk<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Chin,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>El<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>na Kats-<\/span><\/span>Chernin<\/span><\/span>, and Steve Reich.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Universal Edition<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202f<\/span><\/span>includes complete perusal scores of a selection of works from their catalogue. The range of works available for online perusal is fairly wide. Here, for example, you can\u00a0<\/span><\/span>view<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>scores<\/span><\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Gustav Mahler<\/span><\/span>, Alfred\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Schnittke<\/span><\/span>, Luciano\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Berio<\/span><\/span>, and Victoria\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Borisova-Ollas<\/span><\/span>. There are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also<\/span><\/span>\u00a0audio samples of some works.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Not every work in their catalogue includes a complete perusal score, however, and, unlike the Boosey & Hawkes website, there is no direct\u00a0<\/span><\/span>link<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to their complete online score collection. That being said, it is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>definitely\u00a0<\/span><\/span>worth checking their website to see if they include\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0perusal score<\/span><\/span>\u00a0for a particular work<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>You<\/span><\/span>\u00a0can browse their catalogue by composer, work, instrument or genre.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Another option for finding perusal scores is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ScoresOnDemand<\/span><\/span><\/a>, provided by members of Wise Music Group. Publishers include Chester Music,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Novello<\/span><\/span>\u00a0& Co, G. Schirmer\/AMP, Edition Wilhelm Hansen, and Uni<\/span><\/span>\u00f3<\/span><\/span>n Musical.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>There are more than 5,000 scores available for perusal. Locating a specific work proves challenging, however, because the search functionality is limited.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>C<\/span><\/span>hoosing the tab \u201cStacks\u201d is helpful: it groups the scores by composer,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>thereby<\/span><\/span>\u00a0allowing you to scroll through a more manageable list. You can follow\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ScoresOnDemand<\/span><\/span>, or particular \u201cstacks\u201d, and receive updates when new scores are added.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
