{"id":240,"date":"2012-08-22T18:54:36","date_gmt":"2012-08-22T22:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/music-flipside\/?p=240"},"modified":"2012-08-22T19:02:19","modified_gmt":"2012-08-22T23:02:19","slug":"new-thematic-catalogue-of-schubert-lieder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/music-flipside\/new-thematic-catalogue-of-schubert-lieder\/","title":{"rendered":"New thematic catalogue of Schubert Lieder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I made a felicitous discovery late yesterday while scanning the Library&#8217;s new acquisitions shelf: <a href=\"http:\/\/mcaleph.mcgill.ca\/F\/?func=find-b&amp;find_code=SYS&amp;local_base=catalogue&amp;request=003822541\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Schubert Liedlexikon<\/em><\/a>, prepared by Walther D\u00fcrr, Michael Kube, Uwe Schweikert, and Stefanie Steiner. It&#8217;s a wonderful new thematic catalogue of all of Schubert&#8217;s songs. Following Otto Erich Deutsch&#8217;s indexing of Schubert&#8217;s works, the book arranges the songs chronologically by date of composition. Each entry provides the title, Deutsch number, name of poet, a thematic incipit, the full text (with German translations of those few foreign-language texts Schubert set), and a brief discussion of the text and music. A brief closing note gives the vocal range of the piece (in the original key), its location in both the <a href=\"http:\/\/mcaleph.mcgill.ca\/F\/?func=find-b&amp;find_code=SYS&amp;local_base=catalogue&amp;request=000403248\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Neue Schubert-Ausgabe <\/em><\/a>(the more recent Schubert collected works edition) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/mcaleph.mcgill.ca\/F\/?func=find-b&amp;find_code=SYS&amp;local_base=catalogue&amp;request=000085737\" target=\"_blank\">7-volume Peters edition<\/a>, source of the original text, and a brief bibliography for further reading.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_260\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/music-flipside\/files\/2012\/08\/Schubert-Liedlexikon1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-260\" class=\"size-full wp-image-260\" title=\"Schubert Liedlexikon\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/music-flipside\/files\/2012\/08\/Schubert-Liedlexikon1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">REF ML134 S38 A26 2012<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the appendix you&#8217;ll find brief bios of the poets with a list of their settings by Schubert. Three indices provide further access to people, both mythological (Achilles) and real (J. R. Zumsteeg), song titles, and authors of the entries.<\/p>\n<p>Being a B\u00e4renreiter publication, the type and presentation are immaculate and the music excerpts are compact but legibly reproduced.
