The Marvin Duchow Music Library\u2019s audio\/video collection provides a great starting point for those wishing to explore their influential contributions. Here are a few recommended recordings to begin the journey.<\/p>\n<p>Jules Massenet: Recently acquired, the Blu-ray version of <em>Manon<\/em> with Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villaz\u00f3n [DVD 2085] features moving performances and fantastic sonics. On a related note, members of the McGill community can access medici.tv&#8217;s streaming video service to see &#8216;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medici.tv\/#!\/24-hours-with-rolando-villazon\">Une Journ\u00e9e \u00e0 Lyon avec Rolando Villaz\u00f3n<\/a><\/em>,&#8217; a fascinating French film documenting Villaz\u00f3n&#8217;s\u00a0approach to staging Massenet&#8217;s <em>Werther<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_296\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/music-flipside\/files\/2012\/09\/Herodiade.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-296\" class=\"size-full wp-image-296\" title=\"Herodiade\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/music-flipside\/files\/2012\/09\/Herodiade.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/music-flipside\/files\/2012\/09\/Herodiade.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/music-flipside\/files\/2012\/09\/Herodiade-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">H\u00e9rodiade by Jules Massenet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Reveling in luxuriant mid-twentieth-century European vocal sound and style, <em>H\u00e9rodiade<\/em> [CD 29165] was recorded in 1957 and released in 2011. It stars French diva Andr\u00e9a Guiot as Salom\u00e9, Dutch soprano Mimi Aarden in the title role, tenor Guy Fouch\u00e9 as Jean, and baritone Charles Cambon as H\u00e9rode. Four works from Massenet&#8217;s piano output are well served in a recent recording by award-winning French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet [CD 28804].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>John Cage: Mode Records, self-described as &#8216;A record label devoted to New Music,&#8217; has been doing a phenomenal job presenting the music of such progressive luminaries as Feldman, Scelsi, Xenakis, Subotnick, Reynolds, and, of course, Cage. In volume 34 of Mode&#8217;s <em>Cage Edition<\/em>, internationally-lauded pianist Margaret Leng Tan brings her &#8216;A&#8217; game to the world premiere recording of <em>Chess Pieces<\/em> (reconstructed from an exhibition painting!) and the classic <em>Sonatas and Interludes<\/em> for prepared piano [DVD 2171].
