Francis (1878-1959).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For those inspired by this topic, we suggest taking a look at writer and physician Arthur Conan Doyle&#8217;s 1883 posthumous &#8220;lost&#8221; novel <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/mcgill.worldcat.org\/title\/narrative-of-john-smith\/oclc\/712117494&amp;referer=brief_results\" target=\"_blank\">The Narrative of John Smith<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong>, wherein the altruistic protagonist Smith lobbies for a bill to be passed by the House of Commons concerning better care and preservation of books:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;Since we have societies for the prevention of various kinds of cruelty, why do we not have a society for the prevention of cruelty to books?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you ever highlight, underline, or add your own notes and musings into the margins of your own books?
