Meakins Auditorium, McIntyre Medical Building 5th Floor, 3655 Promenade Sir William Osler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 finalists are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>Maria Moustaqim-Barrette<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/mcgill.ca\/library\/files\/library\/moustaqim-barrette_maria_2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cContrarian Contraception: Radical Feminism and <em>The Birth Control Handbook<\/em> in late 1960s Montr\u00e9al&#8221;<\/a> (Mentor: Professor George Weisz)<\/span><br \/>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma,Geneva,sans-serif; color: #800000;\">&#8220;While reading about history of contraception in Canada, I stumbled upon The Birth Control Handbook. When I dug a little deeper, I discovered that this little-known handbook was at the intersection of several of my interests, including women\u2019s health, Canadian and Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois history, and student activism.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>Yi Tong<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/files\/library\/tong_yi_2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Antipsychiatry Movement of the 1960s and its Influence on the Mental Health Care Model in the United States\u201d<\/a> (Mentor: Professor David Wright)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;Being placed at the Douglas Mental Health Institute for the family medicine shadowing program in first year was quite the adventure for me.\u00a0Over time, I became increasingly interested in the history of mental health institutions like the Douglas, mental health care policies and more broadly, the history of psychiatry as a medical field.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sunny Wei \u2013 <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/files\/library\/wei_sunny_2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cNeonatal Anesthesia: The Origins of Controversy\u201d<\/a><strong> (Mentor: Professor Thomas Schlich)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;As medical students, we are exposed to plenty of dogmas. Yet, medical dogma, like everything else in the world is susceptible to error. In accepting this, I sought to elucidate the origins of the formerly accepted belief that newborns did not feel pain&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Faculty, students, and friends are all welcome to attend and show their support for this year&#8217;s finalists. Martin Amphitheatre, the 39th Annual Osler Lectureship welcomes distinguished guest lecturer Dr. Julio SG Montaner, <em>OC, OBC, MD, DSc (hon), FRCPC, FCCP, FACP, FRSC.<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> Director, BC Centre for Excellence in HIV\/AIDS, St. Paul\u2019s Hospital, Providence Healthcare; Professor and Head, UBC-Division of AIDS, UBC and St. Paul\u2019s Hospital Foundation Chair in AIDS Research; UNAIDS Special Advisor on HIV Therapeutics.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Montaner played a key role in establishing the efficacy of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) and since then has established the role of \u2018Treatment as Prevention\u2019 using HAART to simultaneously decrease progression to AIDS and death, as well as HIV transmission.<\/p>\n<h2>From Treatment to Prevention: Rethinking our Approach to Contagious Diseases<\/h2>\n<p>In 1996, medical researchers in British Columbia discovered that combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) significantly improved the quality and length of the lives of patients with HIV\/AIDS, but only after the province began providing cART for free did researchers discover something equally profound: cART also prevented HIV transmission.
