VII from the portfolio of Twenty Original Water-colour Drawings of Australian Birds, by John Gould<\/p><\/div>\n<p>John Gould (1804\u20131881) was an English ornithologist, artist, and publisher of exceptional illustrated books on birds. Well known in natural history circles, he made significant contributions to the work of Charles Darwin through his identification of bird families on the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands, and was a pioneer in the\u00a0determination\u00a0of and communication about Australian birds.<\/p>\n<p>Gould\u2019s own sketches formed the basis of most of his book illustrations, which were often published as hand-coloured lithographs produced\u00a0by his wife Elizabeth or other artists, including Edward Lear, H.C. Richter, and Joseph Wolf.<\/p>\n<p>Among Gould\u2019s most ambitious projects are the large folio volumes of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/mcgill.worldcat.org\/oclc\/226225456\">The Birds of Australia<\/a><\/em> (1840\u20131848) and its <em><a href=\"http:\/\/mcgill.worldcat.org\/oclc\/61636019\">Supplement<\/a><\/em> (first published in 1851), both with hand-coloured lithographs. Along with this first edition and several related titles, McGill holds a number of original Gould drawings, including sixteen used for his <em>Birds of Australia,<\/em>\u00a0produced between 1831 and 1836.<\/p>\n<p>These drawings,\u00a0organized with\u00a0related pieces in a portfolio titled\u00a0<em><a title=\"go to WorldCat record\" href=\"http:\/\/mcgill.worldcat.org\/oclc\/61634212\" target=\"_blank\">Twenty original water-colour drawings of Australian birds<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0can be consulted in Rare Books and Special Collections, and\u00a0our Digital Initiatives team has now made\u00a0digital images available through the Internet Archive: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/mcgilluniversity?and[]=mediatype%3A%22image%22&amp;and[]=subject%3A%22Gould%2C%20John%2C%20--%201804-1881.%22\" target=\"_blank\">browse small thumbnail images<\/a> or\u00a0see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.mcgill.ca\/hostedjournals\/001091914.html\" target=\"_blank\">individual Internet Archive\u00a0records<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0download\u00a0high quality TIFF image files.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Gould (1804\u20131881) was an English ornithologist, artist, and publisher of exceptional illustrated books on birds.
