MacLaren on Paul Kane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We welcome you to a lecture at McGill Library\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/branches\/research-commons\/rooma\">\u00a0Research Commons Presentation Space_A<\/a> for a compelling lecture on Paul Kane\u2019s <em>Wanderings of an Artist<\/em> (1859), to be delivered by Emeritus Professor Ian MacLaren (University of Alberta).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2332\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/rbsc\/files\/2016\/10\/MacLaren-posterBloglarge.jpg\" alt=\"MacLaren posterBloglarge\" width=\"621\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/rbsc\/files\/2016\/10\/MacLaren-posterBloglarge.jpg 621w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/rbsc\/files\/2016\/10\/MacLaren-posterBloglarge-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/rbsc\/files\/2016\/10\/MacLaren-posterBloglarge-388x300.jpg 388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Professor MacLaren will discuss Paul Kane (1810-1871), the best known artist of early English-language Canada, and the alteration of his field writings to make a book \u201creadied for the press\u201d under the title:<em><strong>Wanderings of an Artist among the Indians of North America :\u00a0from Canada to Vancouver\u2019s Island and Oregon through the Hudson\u2019s Bay Company\u2019s Territory and Back Again.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This book appeared in London in 1859 by the publishing giant Longman, and would transform Kane into a hero of early Canada. It was followed by \u00a0subsequent editions, such as a French translation produced in Paris in 1861; and a closer-to-home version out of Toronto in 1925 by the Radisson Society of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>This event is free of charge and all are welcome.
