Moving from the physical to the digital is allowing McGill students, faculty and researchers to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/contact\/departments\/roaar\">ROAAr<\/a>&#8216;s rich holdings in creative new ways.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2488\" style=\"width: 312px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/rbsc\/files\/2016\/11\/VideoWallatMontrealHistoryGroupPaulKane.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2488\" class=\"wp-image-2488\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/rbsc\/files\/2016\/11\/VideoWallatMontrealHistoryGroupPaulKane-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"videowallatmontrealhistorygrouppaulkane\" width=\"302\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2488\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Visualization wall in the Research Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last year, the McGill Library launched its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/branches\/research-commons\/rooma\">Research Commons<\/a>, an innovative, collaborative space that provides next-generation tools to students and researchers. Kane travelled from Ontario to the northwest quadrant of North America in the 1840s, sketching and painting the life and customs of the indigenous peoples across the vast northwestern Canadian wilderness. Rare Books and Special Collections E77 C38 1842<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Library\u2019s rich collection provides researchers with a wealth of Paul Kane editions including the\u00a01859 first edition of<a href=\"http:\/\/catalogue.mcgill.ca\/F\/?func=find-b&amp;find_code=SYS&amp;local_base=catalogue&amp;request=002691199\"> <em>Wande<\/em><em>rin<\/em><em>gs<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and related books in the prized <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/branches\/rarebooks\/special-collections\/lande\">Lande Collection of Canadiana <\/a>and the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/branches\/rarebooks\/special-collections\/lande\"> Lande Arkin Collection of Western Canada<\/a> such as: Catlin\u2019s <em>Letters &amp; Notes on the Manners, customs and condition of the North American Indians (New York, 1842)<\/em>;\u00a0and the extraordinary copy of Warre\u2019s <em>Sketches in North\u00a0 America and the Oregon Territory<\/em>, <em>(London, c1848) <\/em>with chromolithographed plates. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/branches\/rarebooks\/special-collections\/blackader\/\">Blackader-Lauterman rare collections.<\/a> holds numerous important catalogues raisonn\u00e9s on Kane the artist.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by those materials, ROAAr co-sponsored MacLaren\u2019s public lecture about the transformation of Kane\u2019s original notes and sketches into the published work. In his talk, \u201cFrom &#8216;nothing but a pasenger [sic]&#8217; to Canadian Hero: Paul Kane&#8217;s Authorship of <em>Wande<\/em><em>rin<\/em><em>gs<\/em> <em>of an Artist <\/em>(1859),&#8221; MacLaren used Kane\u2019s field notes and drawings to make a meticulous comparison between the first draft of Kane\u2019s manuscript copy versus the published work and its embellishment to fulfill the expectations of a reading public which had been nourished by scenes of the Wild West from prior sources.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_2490\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/rbsc\/files\/2016\/11\/WarreatMontrealBookHistoryPaulKane-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2490\" class=\"wp-image-2490\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.mcgill.ca\/rbsc\/files\/2016\/11\/WarreatMontrealBookHistoryPaulKane-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"warreatmontrealbookhistorypaulkane\" width=\"285\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WARRE, H. By virtue of having the digital images, the audience could learn from the surrogate in lieu of the original, and take advantage of its added digital value: blown-up images, produced with extra graphic work, which allow for unfolding layers of data showcasing the complexities of the illustrations.<\/p>\n<p>Kane\u2019s national reputation and appeal attracted a wide variety of audiences from the academic community: from book and Canadian history to indigenous and cultural studies, as well as from the general public. The event was coordinated by Ann Marie Holland, RBSC Liaison subject specialist in the History of Printing and the Library Rep. for the Montreal Book History Group.
