The Burger book: tasty ways to serve ground meat

I sing this glorious land of ours,
Its motor cars and shows,
Its little gardens, gay with flowers,
Its phones and radios.
Here your ambitious boy may be
Our President if he’s able,
But what spells U.S.A. to me
Is “meat upon the table!”

Ours is the land of steaks and chops,
Of pork, beef, lamb and veal,
And thrifty costs when woman shops
Put meat in any meal.
So if at us should any scoff
Just show this patriot label—
One reason we are better off
Is “meat upon the table.”

The Cocktail hour

It’s almost 5pm on a Friday so why don’t you download a copy of the 1951 classic “The Cocktail Hour” by Master Chef Louis P. De Gouy.

If you are not sure what to make but have some brandy on hand, you can do a quick search and find all 109 mentions of the delicious drink and pick the cocktail that best suits your mood. The orange flambeau bishop might be perfect for a cold night.

Can’t bake

I absolutely can’t bake or cook, but this recipe looks really easy. Just find a few dead woodcock birds from the wilderness and make this delicious pie:

I love how their heads are used for decoration.

Apple picking season is here!

This book taught me about the Canadian apple industry in the 1920s and The Fruit Act which defined the different grades of fruit grown here. The recipes for apple sauce, jam, jelly, butter, steamed, compote, baked, desserts, puddings, caramel, cakes, pies, relishes and salads are simply amazing.
