Collection of Montreal tourism material

Digitization at the McGill library is provided as a research service so it’s always a pleasure to see our work in scholarly publications. Recently a special collaboration between the Rare Books and Special Collections librarian Ann Marie Holland and our own digitization administrator Jennifer Innes helped get over 20 images from our collection into the beautifully illustrated Destination Québec: Une histoire illustrée du tourisme by Marc H Choko, Michèle Lefebvre & Danielle Léger.

To give you a peak at some of our contributions I’ve posted a small subset but it’s worth picking up the book for the almost 350 images they have pulled together from diverse collections.   All originals are available for consultation from Rare Books and Special Collections reading room during regular opening hours.

Arabic lithographed books exhibition

As part of the Arabic lithographed books exhibition at the Islamic Studies library we digitized all 16 full volumes before they went on display. This summer we will be working together to create a digital exhibition but until then you can download the full volumes from the catalogue.

I’ve chosen a single page from a selection of the volumes to give you a taste for how beautiful they are. To learn more I would recommend you head over before September 30 2014 to the Islamic Studies library to see the full exhibition in person. This Collection includes many examples of lithographed books in Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish, and Urdu, dated from the eighteenth century until the mid-twentieth century.

You can find a full bibliography of the books digitized and included in the exhibition over at the Islamic Library blog.

Montreal Leisure – Consumer Society

Art Deco was a style that one could wear: luxurious furs, long gowns, three piece suits, and accessories for women and men were just a few of the means to display one’s sense of taste and fashion. Eaton’s was one of Montreal’s leading department stores and catered to a wide clientele. It operated a successful catalogue service through which orders could be placed by telephone or sent by mail. Other stores catering to Montreal’s elite were a block away from Eaton’s on Phillip’s Square; Henry Birks and Sons specialised in fine jewellery and table wares and Henry Morgan and Co. (now The Bay) featured fine goods from Europe.

Montreal Leisure – Travel & Leisure

Travel for both business and pleasure became far easier with the increased speed of transportation and the introduction of new modes of travel. Headquartered in Montreal, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) built on its nineteenth-century dominance of the Canadian railway service by establishing shipping lines. Following the coordination of the schedules of the transcontinental trains and transatlantic ocean liners, the volume of business at Montreal grew to be second only to that of New York City. By 1930, the CPR operated 14 first and cabin-class ocean liners, including the British Empire’s largest and fastest, the Empress of Britain, out of Montreal and Quebec City. These brochures depict the leisure activities of pleasure outings in the newly accessible countryside. Menus and views of interiors provide a glimpse of a few of the opportunities for fine dining in Montreal in the 1920s and 1930s. Theatre programmes participate in depicting the era in terms of society sensibilities.

This exhibition was organized to celebrate 10th World Congress being held in Montreal, Quebec, May 24 – 30, 2009 and put together by the staff from Rare Books and Special Collections and the Blackader-Lauterman Library.

Original water-colour paintings on the natural history of St. Domingo

Just in time for spring I wanted to post about some beautiful zoological illustrations that came across our v-craddle scanner last week. Found between the pages – Macdonald College Magazine

We recently received a shipment of books from our Macdonald campus library for a new digitization project we’re starting up this summer. While going through the volumes we came across the unusual find of what we think is a pressed corsage!

Flowers found in the pages of the Macdonald College Magazine - volume XII, No.4, April-May 1920. p. 236 - 237.

The Macdonald College magazine was published between 1910 and 1932 by the students and contained articles on student activities and other various topics, specifically agricultural ones. The magazine also contains a number of advertisements for local businesses which will be valuable in the student of Montreal and McGill history. This spring we’ll be digitizing the full run and making it available online.

The University Library as seen in 1922

“The library may be compared to a vast telephone exchange by means of which the mind of the student can be put in communication with other minds. The catalogue corresponds to the telephone book. The student finds in it the call number of the person with whom he wishes to be connected. The attendant at the Delivery Desk corresponds to “Central” by making the connection, and if a book is already out the line is “busy”. If the library is small, the opportunities of the student is small. The larger the number of volumes the greater is the student’s chance of getting in touch with other people who have something to say worth hearing. The Library is also like a long distance telephone system, for it enables the student to listen to thinkers and writers in practically every country of the world. The Library, however, has a great advantage over the ordinary long-distance exchange, because it can put the student in touch with great minds of other centuries as well. It is, therefore, not merely a system of communication in the present but also in the historical past.”
