Open Library of the Humanities (OLH)

McGill Library is now a supporting member of the Open Library of the Humanities (OLH).

The Open Library of Humanities is an academic-led, gold open-access publisher. With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, OLH covers its costs by payments from an international library consortium, rather than any kind of author fee.  McGill’s support means journals such as GlossaArchitectural HistoriesDigital Medievalist among others can publish open access without charging any author fees.

Authors who publish in OLH journal retain their article copyright and have the rights to link, share and disseminate published article copies freely.

Open Access Exhibition by Microfiches

This week, October 22 to 28, the McGill Library is celebrating Open Access Week. On view now in the Redpath Library building is a bilingual exhibition created by Microfiches.  The twelve exhibition posters explain key open access concepts. The texts were written by renowned scholarly communications specialists and visually interpreted by an artist.

A new SSMU touch table

Did you notice the large touch table in the Redpath Library building this past term? It’s really a giant ipad on wheels! This touch table was funded by the SSMU Library Improvement Fund and we have been having fun creating experiences to share with you.

The first was an update of all of the projects that the SSMU LIF has funded in the Library over the past two years.

The experiences are created using licensed software called IntuiFace. As its name suggests the software is very intuitive and allows us to easily create interactive displays. Our second experience showcased four resources in one:

  • a virtual whiteboard,
  • the Library’s PressReader database (daily international newspapers),
  • virtual Library floor plans,
  • feedback from you.

We have been working on the summer experience, soon to be live in the Redpath Library building once exams have finished. It will showcase summer travel videos and SSMU’s instagram feed.
