Open Library of the Humanities (OLH)

McGill Library is now a supporting member of the Open Library of the Humanities (OLH).

The Open Library of Humanities is an academic-led, gold open-access publisher. With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, OLH covers its costs by payments from an international library consortium, rather than any kind of author fee.  McGill’s support means journals such as Glossa, Architectural Histories, Digital Medievalist among others can publish open access without charging any author fees.

Authors who publish in OLH journal retain their article copyright and have the rights to link, share and disseminate published article copies freely.

Therapy Dog visit leaves students ‘begging’ for more

The dogs are back!

Having a ‘ruff’ time with midterms? The McGill Humanities and Social Sciences Library invites students to take a ‘paws’ with Brandy and Astra, two Shetland Sheepdogs who are part of the Blue Ribbon Therapy Dog program.

Yesterday afternoon, students stopped by the Redpath Library Building Group Zone to spend some time with the dogs to clear their heads and take a well-deserved break from studying. 

Harriet is happy to answer students’ questions about her dogs.

Harriet Schleifer is a co-founder of the Blue Ribbon Therapy Dog program. She has been working with Brandy, who is 14 years old, for 12 years. Astra, who is only 2 years old, is the apprentice. Harriet and Brandy have been coming to McGill for many years; visit requests from the University have skyrocketed since the program began, with other universities and cegeps catching on as well.

Harriet takes her dogs on visits to hospitals, nursing homes, women’s shelters and other universities. They also participate in a program where children read to dogs in order to improve their reading skills.

Astra sits pretty for some treats, while Brandy enjoys some attention.

Despite their packed social schedule, Brandy and Astra will be here again next week!

The visit will take place on November 21st from 12 to 2 pm in the Redpath Library Building Group Zone.

Therapy Dog visits are possible thanks to funding from the Mary H. Brown Fund!

After two hours, 14-year-old Brandy is ready for a nap!

New Redpath Book Display: LGBTQ+ History Month at McGill

For some, October might sound like Oktoberfest, autumn leaves and the beginning of a new term. But for McGill, it is the first LGBTQ2i+ History Month and the library is celebrating it.

McGill’s iteration of Canada’s national LGBT History Month includes a special focus on Two-Spirit (2) and intersex (i) folks.

For the entire month of October, the Redpath Book Display (Main Floor) will showcase materials discussing the joys and frustrations of the Gay Rights Movement as well as the complexities of identities and experiences within the community.

Come browse and borrow.

We will be restocking all month with an ongoing collection of books, so feel free to check back often for new titles!

There is also a list of relevant eBooks and DVDs that can be borrowed from the HSSL Self-Serve Reserves Room.
