McGill Library has recently installed the HTC Vive, a state-of-the-art virtual reality system, in a room in its Research Commons space (RM 22A, Research Commons Room B). The system uses a headset, motion controllers, and a room-scale tracking system to allow users to interact with and physically move around a virtual space. The system will be bookable during limited times by students who would like to try out some fascinating virtual reality experiences or would like to experiment with building their own.
In celebration of the launch of this new service the library is offering students the chance to try out Google Earth VR, software which can transport you to a wide range of interesting locations around the globe and allow you to experience them from many different perspectives: as a giant overlooking New York City, for instance, or as a person standing at the foot of the Pyramids of Giza.
If you’re interested in stepping into the virtual world, drop by Research Commons Room B in Redpath Library between 1 and 4PM on Tuesday, March 14th. See you there!
Data Lab Workstations: Open when the Humanities and Social Sciences Library is open.

Looking for a physical space on the McGill campus that can help you find and use data for your research? Need help finding data on a particular topic? Look no further than the McGill Library Data Lab that is located on the 2nd floor of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library (Room, M2-37A).
Consult with a data librarian to help you:
- Discover and cite relevant datasets
- Load and manipulate data in statistical software packages
- Understand metadata documentation
Open when the Humanities and Social Sciences Library is open, this research space offers 14 workstations with the latest versions of SPSS, SAS, Stata, NVivo, R, ArcGIS and more! Available on a first-come-first serve basis.
We have dedicated consultation services Monday through Thursday 10am-12pm to further support your data needs.
While we do not provide statistical consulting services, we are here to help you discover, access and use data to get it into the right shape and format for you to run a smooth analysis.
To make an appointment with a data librarian outside our consultation hours, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule a meeting.
I’ve updated my list of new management and business titles to include the 30+ books that came into the Library in February.
New Books in Management and Business: May 2016 to present
If there are any titles that we don’t have at the Library and that should be part of our collection, please feel free to send us your suggestions!
